Life is a series of choices. Every step is a choice, an option, a decision. We try our best to make these choices based on what we know. What we pick may not be based on what is right and what is wrong, but what we believe in our minds and hearts. Whatever we do decide, we have to compromise. It is always one or the other.

Distractions: A fact of Life

Question: Do you still celebrate your birthday with gifts? Vote on the poll on the right please! Thank you for your participation!

Lost In Thought Isn’t life just full of distractions? First, to better understand where I’m going with this, let us look at the definition of distraction. I like to use Google definition, they always have the most definite definitions.

Google defines distraction (from wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn) as:

  • mental turmoil; “he drives me to distraction”
  • an obstacle to attention
  • beguilement: an entertainment that provokes pleased interest and distracts you from worries and vexations
  • the act of distracting; drawing someone’s attention away from something; “conjurers are experts at misdirection”

I tend to like the third one up there. An entertainment, it says. That is quite true in my case. I have spend the past couple of weeks mostly enjoying my Playstation Portable wreaking havoc in GTA (Grand Theft Auto; A game where you play the role of a mobster.) I wanted to start reading, but I didn’t because I was busy playing the game.

I wanted to write down some ideas, get started with some tutorials I have waiting for me, and maybe start writing some code and playing around with software. I didn’t do that because I was busy playing that video game. Not only that, I was also watching some movies and anime. Some of you may think, why is this a distraction? It is normal to want to play and have fun when you have nothing better to do. Here, the real question is asked:

What are they distracting me from?

For those who have these items in their plans, then we can consider them a part of the plan, and not really a distraction. For someone like me, who has other plans in mind, I could call these a distraction. For a person who does not have writing and reading as part of the plan could call those specific actions distractions. We can see here that a distraction, is something that draws our attention away from our original plan.

All around us there are distractions of all types. Entertainment does not end, you can never run out of music, movies, video games, TV shows, TV programs, games, devices, gadgets, books, places to go, things to do, people to talk to, web sites to visit, things to download, etc. How many of these are distractions, and how many are quite necessary for our plan, whatever our plan may be?

What distractions do you have in your own life? How do you deal with distractions?

I am currently distracted by the heat at office and the fact that I gotta get going’ to the salon for the parteeeeeeh :/

  2. Amethyst |

Interesting. Madry, I never thought of it that way. I think everything is part of my plan. My therapist is a distraction. I guess that was never part of my plan. I deal with it in a very nonchalant way;\

distractions r wht keep us going. and ya i too consider them defined as definition#3..entertainment. My weakness are the TV series. i simply cant get enough of them:P ill stay up the whole night if the episodes im watching truly deserve my time:P even if i have something huge the next day, which usually happens in my case;P

  4. Cat |

    mmmmmmmmmm interesting !

  5. Laialy_q8 |

dis-attach myself from the distraction … its hard but its effective

  6. Nutty |

My problem isn’t distraction as much as it’s procrastination. See. I’m not easily tempted by the entertainments around me, but when I want to procrastinate I, intentionally, distract myself with anything. I think what needs to be done here is a consolidation of discipline. He that has a clear goal and perseveres in it will not fall prey to distraction, but he that does not completely believe in his dream will create his own forms of distractions. When you’re seriously thinking of that software of your, the PSP wouldn’t look as inviting. Now excuse me ladies and gents… my own PSP awaits XD Go Man U!

Cool post. I thought, I realized that what distracts me most is reading and places to go! Although reading is a most, and it’s always in my plan, but most of the time it violates other items’ rights in my agenda :D

Cool walla.. Sometimes, I realize that there is something distracts me, so I keep away from it, if my plans that day are based on TIME… Also when I was student, I was controlling those distraction little, but now I am kinda ba6alya so I can do what ever I want :D and :S

Thanks for the GREAT falsfa question!

Happy New Year N … Be Blessed !

  9. Sushi |

Why must there always be a plan in order for something to be called a distraction? Those means of leisure you indulge youself are natural especially to people like you who work/used to work a lot and they simply need time to compensate. I dont think you should feel guilty for spoiling yourself a little. From another perspective, some people might be in circumstances where they feel they need to fill their lives with time wasters and interesting things just to pass time or to escape from something. The truth is, it’s all about balancing things out in your life.

As for me, I think you pretty much have a clear idea of what my distraction is by now :P In fact, I invent distractions in order to feed my procrastination.

  10. Sushi |

    Happy New Year ;)

its a very hard question… like what wuld u do?
u still in play-station? what fascinate you in it?

  12. Nasser |

    chika,
I think the salon is a good distraction isn’t it? :p Hope you had fun at the party!

    Amethyst,
I believe the therapist is a distraction unless he/she is helping you to overcome something, i.e. to help you get where you want to go, something like that. Nonchalant, I like the word ;P

    lone.rangeress,
lol, yeah tell me about it. It actually happened to me a few times, I ended up skipping work! lol.

    Cat,
    It is isn’t it! ;P

    Laialy,
Yep, very hard I am sure.

    Nutty,
Ah, I like that distinction at the end. It has so much truth to it! Perseverance truly rules out, and creates a straight and unwavering path to a destination! lol Enjoy your PSP, did you win? :p

    Mai,
You’re most welcome Mai! And since you’re ba6aliya, don’t worry too much, get distracted as much as you can afford and enjoy it! :p el fora9 ma teyee wayed bel 3omer! hehe.

    Grey,
Thank you man! Same to you!

    Sushi,
Happy New Year to you too! :D Yeah it is all about balancing things out. I am striving to reach an imbalance where I can just earn enough money and use my maximum time to procrastinate and get distracted from regular life :P Wouldn’t it be cool if we got payed for procrastination? lol. Oh btw, did you know that some ppl get payed to play Halo? ;P

    fadidra,
I like it because it is just entertaining, silly time wasting. It is not very serious, and I can always just switch it off or reset it. That is why I think it fascinates me you know. In my case, I simply put it down and try to do what I really want to do, but I tend to pick up something else like an old book, or start cleaning, or going through my drawer. Ashya malha da3y bs eb nafs el wagt ga3ed a3a66el nafsy 3an el shay ely me7taj asaweh!

@all: I’m leaving to Dubai in a couple of hours, so I may not be around for a few days. Kel 3am o entow eb khair! Good luck to those who have exams.

  13. Sushi |

    No waaaay!!!! Really?!

I knew you play for money on Zone.com but I didn’t know it applies to Halo too. I bought a new game yesterday, will tell you about it later :P

  14. Marzouq |

  17. Delicately Realistic |

  18. Vixen |

I myself am a distraction :D Don’t know how to feels being at the other end of that :P

  19. Greyshorts |

My distractions all stem from a lack of motivation and a sense of indifference . How do i deal with it ? I’m trying to force myself to give a damn .

  20. KWT23 |

cool post. It is even harder when you really need to focus on something that is really important but you can’t.

    Nassoori,

wish you a very happy 2008, and i hope Dubai is for you an “entertainment that provokes pleased interest and distracts you from worries and vexations” :p

    Love, XX

  23. hammoodee |

my friends distract me from daily drama, and music is also a very active distracting tool, especially while driving, I play nintendo ds alot these days too….having said that, sometimes i need distractions from my distractions

  24. Kaileena |

I think that distractions are quite useful, since we cant live life seriously all time without the risk of losing our sanity!

But the amount of distractions is the main question here! too much of it can cause multiple dangerous problems, even mental problems such as depression and anxiety since people can lose track of many things essential in their lives.

A movie a week, an episode a day is the perfect amount of distraction from our daily lives in my opinion!

  25. Hope |

now what would my life be without my sweet distractions

  26. joud |

    blogging is my biggest distraction

  27. Chirp |

Everything is a distraction to me! I can barely concentrate on something when something else takes my concentration away .. ” OOOH LOOK A PLANE ” :P

  28. fourme |

    Life itself is a distraction!

  29. Shaymaa |

Perseverance and Meditation works for me. Whenever a distraction comes by, take a deep breathe, put it in a bubble, breath out and let it fly..

But what would life be without distractions?

You’ll miss out on a lot. So really, I don’t think shooting some hoops with my brothers is a distraction even when I am closing on a deadline. I will get it done (inshallah) but I would not miss the game. We need “distractions”.

  30. ammaro.com |

look at it this way; there are some things in life you dont really want to do, but you have to do them; ie, take out the trash, go to work, and so on

the things that distract you from those, are the things you WANT to do, but you DONT have to do… ie, watch TV, cruise around, be lazy, and so on.

therefore, distractions are the fun stuff

  31. KJ |

Videogames is God-sent my friend. Huzza!

  32. Amethyst |

    Alive?

  33. manutdfanatic |

Entertainment is not, has never been, don’t think will ever be a source of distraction for me.

While it is true that distractions tend to divert one’s mind away from their original plans, it is also true that distractions can also be somewhat healthy at times, provided they are kept within a certain limit. Personally, it is not easy to distract me, I tend to put off some things sometimes, yet I can still manage to have some amount of control over what’s distracting me.

Sidenote: I didn’t really read the whole post. I am distracted. =)

  34. Nasser |

    Sushi,
Yes way, mainly for tournaments and such! OK remind me to ask you about that game! :p

    Marzouq,
lol! That’s a nice way to put it.

    Amethyst,
Happy new year to you too! :D

    Navy Girl,
FOCUS is not easy when the distraction is right there.. urges.. can you control them as easily?

    Delicately Realistic,
Hehe, well my blog is a positive distraction! Better stick to it! Happy new year to you too :D

    Vixen,
That’s a very large claim! :P I’m guessing distractions can be fun.. they’re not all bad! *cough* *ahem!*

    Greyshorts,
is it working? That’s the real question..

    KWT23,
That is the hardest thing! But it has to be done sooner or later.

(more replies to come soon.. )

  35. Nasser |

    desert-roses,
oh online chatting could probably be the most common distraction! especially at work or with work related tasks! :l

    Sarah,
Hi! Thanks dear and yes it was the perfect distraction :D

    hammoodee,
hehe thats a nice way to look at it, hadn’t thought about having distractions from distractions!

    Kaileena,
    Yep, control is the key!

    Hope,
Your life? I’m afraid to even question that! :p

    Joud,
It isn’t isnt it? Lovely though I must admit.

    Chirp,
    LOL! that’s ADD! :p

    fourme,
    from what?

    Shaymaa,
I love that expression and I believe it can work. Bubbles. I should try that. Life would be boring true, but I guess if these distractions stop being distractions and rather be break entertainment of some sort.

    Ammar,
They are, but doesn’t mean the stuff that you have to do can’t be fun.. just have to think about it a bit more!

    KJ,
LOL, yes, sent to distract you and keep you entertained until you get a seizure! hehe

    Amethyst,
Yes, I was in Dubai! It was great.. I loved it. ;D

    manutdfanatic,
Yes, limits! Distractions should be limited. And you should finish reading the post! :p

  36. Amethyst |

El7emdillah 3ala elsalama. Glad you had fun:)

  37. Nasser |

Allah esalmech! :) Thank you ;D

  38. suspic |

Getting a big ass flat screen, an xbox360 and a PS3, and a shitload of blue ray DVDs when it’s finals season!

    That’s distractions right fuckin’ there!

    Help.. me..!

  39. Nasser |

    Suspic,
Woah, it sure is! There is no help I’m afraid, you are doomed! :/

  40. fourme |

Why do you think we were put on this earth for? To make money, reach high positons, etc? Our sole purpose of existance (this may sound a tad religous) is to worship god and that is what is stated in the Quran. I can’t quote exactly the words cuz I don’t know them off by heart, but it states ‘that us humans were created and put on earth just to worship god But life itself will distract us with all its play and pleasures’.

Thats why I believe life itself is a distraction, but thn the majority of us are living and breathing this distraction and we forget the purpose of our existance.

  41. Navy Girl |

well .. okay it depends .. on both the distraction itself & the thing whatever your doing !! i mean dont get me wrong i get distracted bs only when i’m doing things i dont like .. or maybe not important .. BUT if i had my mind into something .. i kinda cant hear anything around .. i live in my own world till i’m done lol :D

  42. Nasser |

    fourme,
Thanks for making the connection, that was the original thought that got me to write this :)

    Navy Girl,
    mashallah 3alech thats great :D

  43. fourme |

my pleasure.. so I broke the code :p

  44. Nasser |

    lol! Yes, mashallah 3alech ;P fe6eeeeeeeeena! :P

Reserved, going to add something here later.
