I haven’t been blogging much or following comments or anything for that matter. Lately I’ve been getting e-mail notifications of spam comments which go through. These spam comments were made by regular people in India and other places who were hired to comment on my blog.

Aksimet doesn’t detect them because they are normal people. They can bypass the captcha and every other spam blocking mechanism. Now, I’ve decided to block them completely before they even reach my blog, how? I’ll tell you.

I installed WP-Ban and added the following IPs:

122.163.161.*
122.161.93.*
121.246.81.*
64.53.129.110

78.47.125.152 – 78.47.125.159

It is sad if a legitimate person in those segements was curious and decided to read and comment on my blog, but frankly spam comments are annoying. It doesn’t matter if you get a regular person to do the dirty work rather than a script, a spam comment is still a spam comment!

So there…

In another note, I’m more active on twitter than I am on my blog. 140 characters seem more than convenient for whatever I have to say. You can find me here;

I have installed twitter tools by Alex King. This will enable me to post more, when I post a tweet on twitter it will be posted here, and when I post an entry on my blog here, it will be linked on my twitter page. And no this will not cause the world to end as Alex King’s FAQ says,

What happens if I have both my tweets posting to my blog as posts and my posts sent to Twitter? Will it cause the world to end in a spinning fireball of death?

Actually, Twitter Tools has taken this into account and you can safely enable both creating posts from your tweets and tweets from your posts without duplicating them in either place.

Also, I apologize for the river of tweets recently in the feed. Those have been taken care of.

Twitter is a micro-blogging social network website.

Original Plugin Description

The Preview Theme Plugin allows you to take a quick peek at a theme without having to switch to it via the Presentation manager. By default, if you are logged in as a level 8 or above user, you can specify “preview_theme=Theme Name” in the URI query string to preview any installed theme. Regular blog readers will not be affected by this setting. They will still see the theme selected in Options->Presentation or the Theme Switcher plugin.

themey’s Changes to the Plugin

I have modified this slightly to return an unregistered user to the login/register page of the site.

My Addition to the Plugin

I modified Themey’s version to include a page in the “Presentation” tab to be able to easily click and preview themes in a different window.

Tested with WordPress 2.2.1

Download: Preview Theme WordPress Plugin (Version 0.9.2)

Instructions:
– Unzip the file and upload the preview_theme.php into your wp-plugins directory.
– Activate the plugin.
– Click on the “Presentation” tab.
– Click on the “Preview Themes” sub menu at the top.
– Click the theme links on the page to preview them.

I was looking at an article in LifeHack that has some very useful WordPress plugins. I hurried on over to check them, the one that fascinated me the most was the Show Top Commentators plugin by Nate. I downloaded it, installed it, only to find out it didn’t support widgets!

I googled, and hacked the original code and enabled widget functionality. In an effort to contact the creator and inform him of this change, I googled, and came across a widget enabled version of the plugin; “Top Commentators” by Webgrrrl.

In the end keeping my version, only because I ran into a few database errors while trying to install Webgrrrl’s version, even though it has all options in the Widget Sidebar Arrangements page.

My Version: Show Top Commentators Hacked
Webgrrrl’s Version: Top Commentators
Original Version: Show Top Commentators
