Life is a series of choices. Every step is a choice, an option, a decision. We try our best to make these choices based on what we know. What we pick may not be based on what is right and what is wrong, but what we believe in our minds and hearts. Whatever we do decide, we have to compromise. It is always one or the other.

Today’s Headlines

I haven’t written about the news in a while, so today I’m going to share some headlines I read in the newspaper.

Eight Digit Phone System to Be Effective Oct. 17th
As you all have heard (and might have noticed) we are running out of phone numbers in Kuwait. With a new communication company opening up soon, there will be a huge shortage, and the ministry has to account for expansion in the future. The system will be as follows*:

New Number Comments
0 International Calls 00
1 112 will replace 777. Only for emergency calls (fire and police)
2 All land line numbers.
3 For future ministry numbers.
4 Zain telecommunication company lines starting with the number 4.
5 For the third telecommunication company 50-000-000 -> 59-000-000
6 For all Wataniya lines which start with the number 6.
7 To be added to Zain and Wataniya lines which start with the number 7.
8 Reserved for future.
9 To be added to Zain telecommunication company lines which start with the number 9.

I found it surprising and quite great that 112 is slowly becoming the universal emergency number. It was recently introduced in the EU and is making its way now to the middle east it seems.

Female Police Cadets’ admission starts Sunday 29th June
The article claims that females with degrees ranging from High School (60% in Science major and 65% in Arts) and up to University graduates will be accepted into the program. Classes will be held only in the mornings and the program will only be one year.

I’m not sure how I feel about this. It would be a good thing I suppose to have women who are ready to serve and protect. This would also benefit in terms of dealing with female citizens for those who feel uncomfortable around men. Though I wonder if their trainers will all be men or not?

How do you feel about female police officers in Kuwait? Share your thoughts below!

Burning Car in Rumethiya

Question: Are you traveling this Eid or New Year, or both? I know there is a long way between both vacations but I’m sure expats who have left for Christmas or are planning to leave soon will be gone until after the New Year (please take me with you). What are your plans?

Burning Car in Rumethiya As I was driving to work this morning, I passed by what was obviously a burning car. I can only assume that the people in the car have fled the scene and were getting some help.

I was very tempted to stop and get the fire extinguisher out of my car and use it, however there was no way to get to the burning car without obscuring the current path I was in.

What shook me was that there wasn’t ANYONE who was standing there using some type of fire extinguisher to put out the fire! Wasn’t it required by law that every car have one? How long has this car been burning already? I’m sure it has been at least burning for five minutes, I could see the flames from the opposite light!

I’m slowly beginning to believe that in a time of crises, people would flee rather than help, which is a very very sad thought.

My take on: Planet In Peril

Planet in Peril Today I finished watching CNN’s two part two hour special, Planet in peril. I haven’t been so moved in a very long time! At first, I was very reluctant to watch it. Everywhere you turn there is a natural disaster. You are always reminded of the sad stories around the world in the news and everywhere around us. I acknowledged it, but I didn’t want to get myself exposed more than I already have been.

What got me to watch this show was that I wanted to see the big picture of what is really going on. What I saw was something far beyond what I had expected, I also discovered a few things I did not know about myself.

The program brought up the issues of global warming, deforestation, over population, and species extinction. Some of the cast went around the world to confront these issues and expose first hand what is happening at the source or the areas most affected by these issues.

Sure it was sad to see some of the effects of these issues in the world. However, what affected me the most was the pollution in China, and how it affected innocent families. We may not like to see and hear repeatedly how we are destroying our own world, but this does not mean that we should turn our back, and close our eyes and ears.

Since we are all a part of this world, we all should play an important role. Whatever it may be, and no matter how little it is, be sure that you can make an impact on the future.

It was an Earthquake in Iran

earthquake_iran Yesterday I posted about the building wobbling (my new word). It turns out it is the aftereffects of a 5.1 magnitude earthquake that hit Iran. It was later reported that it was felt on the coastline in Kuwait. My colleague and I thought it was related to a construction nearby.

New Building Burning in Downtown Kuwait

This is what I saw when I arrived at 7:40pm September 29th 2007. The top few floors of what seems to be a new building are burning pretty badly. There is a helicopter circling the location, probably finding a quick route for ground support. However, I couldn’t find anything about it anywhere in the radio, or TV for that matter. All I could think about was how the owner the building must feel. Allah ekon fe 3ona, o enshalla no one got hurt!

Bacn, Spam, and Red Meat

This is the newest internet buzz word. Most of you are familiar with email spam, which is junk email that comes in from only God knows where and is meant to lure you to click on links or download Trojans or viruses.

Bacn is a different story, as mentioned by Wikipedia.

(pronounced bacon) is the term given to electronic messages which have been subscribed to and are therefore not unsolicited but are often unread by the recipient for a long period of time. Bacn is email you want but not right now.

Basically it is newsletters and such that you have subscribed to. And you all know what the other Bacon is? Don’t you?

Spam, to all you unfamiliar with food related meaning of the term is:

Spam luncheon meat is a canned precooked meat product made by the Hormel Foods Corporation. The labeled ingredients in the Classic variety of Spam are: chopped pork shoulder meat with ham meat added, salt, water, sugar, and sodium nitrite. The product has become part of many jokes and urban legends about mystery meat, which has made it part of pop culture and folklore.

It looks like email is being categorized as meat. Here is what you can expect in the future:

Sirloin, the email coming in from your best friends.
Tenderloin, email from your significant other.
Ribs, is email from your family.

BBQ. Anyone?

Unjust Arrest and Detainment of a Kuwaiti Blogger

In short I want to extend my deepest sadness and full support to the Kuwaiti community for this unjust behavior. I’d like to say that I do not condone such actions. The unjust behavior we have heard about yesterday must be looked into and we must stand together for our brothers and sisters.

Emotion-Sensing Furniture Changes Hues

Emotion Sensing FurnitureFuwapica — Soft and flashy. This is the new furniture of the future. Whereby it interacts with your mood and its surroundings to change hues. A concept would be such that..

a person might walk into a room furnished with Fuwapica, place a memento or favorite item — let’s say a blue vase — on the table and sit on one of the chairs. Gradually the chairs begin to change from white to blue.

Isn’t that just very cool? Read more about it at the Discovery Channel Technology News website.

Tea or Coffee

Which do you prefer? Here are some random cool facts I found;

Caffeine –

  • Starbucks Grande - 320mg
  • Regular 8oz Coffee - 133mg
  • Red Bull - 80mg*
  • FDA for limit in Sodas - 75mg

But ouch! How about this piece of news.. “caffeine can also be highly addictive and [...] it has been shown to decrease fertility in both men and women.” — yikes!

Antioxidants –

Fruits, Coffee, and Tea all have antioxidants. You may wonder “What have antioxidants been credited with? Everything from lowering the risk of certain cancers to reducing heart attacks to slowing the aging process.”

The original article goes into MUCH more detail discussing the relation of tea and coffee to subjects such as; Bone Health, Oral Health, Immune System, Liver Disease, Cancer, Diabetes, and much more. Follow the original link at the bottom of this post.

* As a note, Red Bull is about the sugar, not the caffeine as many might think.
